Batman by Gaslight

This is another garage kit, this one by Killer Kits (formerly Dirty Dogs) in England. This kit is based on the Gotham by Gaslight graphic novel published in 1989. In this particular story (DC's first Elseworlds book), writer Brian Augustyn and artist Mike Mignola put Batman in the late 19th century, battling the infamous Jack the Ripper. Because of the 19th century setting, the Batman costume is much simpler and lower-tech--note the simple brown leather belt with throwing knives, the Sherlock Holmes-type cape, the tall leather boots, and the cowl with plain eye cutouts (no white lenses!). It's a pretty simple kit, but a great pose of an alternate-reality Batman.

This kit used more of a porcelain-type resin, very hard, very difficult to work with. I received the kit with both bat-ears broken off (one of the problems with shipping all the way from the U.K.!), so I had to sculpt new ears with putty. In addition, there was no base included, so I varnished up a simple wooden plaque, which worked fairly well. Other than that, the only construction was Batman's right arm--it was almost more like a statue than a kit.

You can order this kit from the Killer Kits Web site. (Note that the build-up shown on their site has an incorrect--although attractive--color scheme.)
